Vinayagar chathurthi and neivediyam!!!

 Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Vinayager chathurthi is the day on which Lord ganesha was born. This festival last for 11 days.Vinayagar is worshiped as the supreme god of wisdom and good fortune. It is celebrated in all parts of India. He is the son of Shiva and Parvathi. In India it is celebrated by making clay idols and decorated in a grant manner.

I have a craze of collecting different kinds of ganesh idol.In India we used to buy clay idol, but after coming to US it is tough to find a pond:( .I usually buy ganesh idols for every good occasion. These are some i bought in Us.I left the remaining in my mom's place.I use to think ganesha as my friend , my son not as a god.For this chathurthi i did kolukaatai, sundal and payasam.

Kolukattai

For the outer dough

Rice flour-1 1/2 cup
Salt
oil-1 tsb
Water-1 cup app

Heat water in a non-stick pan, when it starts to boil add oil, salt. Now slowly add the rice flour, such that no lumps are formed.Cool the dough for few mins till it is soft and playable.I made kadala paruppu(channa dhal) stuffing .

For the stuffing

Channa dhall-1 cp
Jaggery-1 cup(broken into small pieces)
Elachi powder-a pinch
Shredded coconut-1 tsb

Cook channa dhal in cooker or in a pan with water untill it is soft and mashable. Now drain water and allow it to cool.In a blender grind channa dhal coarsely.Take a seperate pan to make the jaggery syrup .When syrup becomes little thick add the grinded channa dhal till it becomes thick. Finally add elachi powder and shredded coconut.

Method.

Now knead the dough for few minutes .Take a small ball of dough and spread it in a plastic sheet that is applied with oil. When it comes to a small puri shape keep small amount of the channa dhall and close it firmly to a perfect shape. Finally steam kolukattai for 10 to 15 mins.

I like to contribute this recipe to the event Ganesh chathurthi hosted by hosted by Purva
